Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
