At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

The evident and straightforward truth that Christ from scripture calls for a form of radical love focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.
