A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
